Overview & Objectives

Forklifts play an important role in many industries, but like all machinery, this equipment can pose risks for workers unless safety protocols are followed. Everyone who works with or near forklifts should be aware of common hazards, safety best practices, and the regulations that govern the use of forklifts and powered industrial trucks. Forklift Hazard Awareness for All Industries provides essential forklift safety training to ensure every team member understands how to keep themselves and others safe when working around forklifts.

NOTICE: This course is not intended to be used as training to achieve forklift operator certification.

This introductory online course explains how to stay safe when working on job sites where forklifts are used. Course topics include:

  • Seven forklift classifications
  • Common forklift hazards and statistics
  • Strategies for minimizing and eliminating hazards
  • Regulations and resources on forklift safety
  • Best practices for communicating hazards and how they should be corrected to operators and other workers
  • Powered industrial trucks, including rider, narrow aisle, hand, and hand/rider trucks
  • Electric and internal combustion tractors
  • OSHA and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommendations and standards
  • Best practices for pedestrian traffic
  • Lifting personnel
  • Identifying reckless forklift operation
  • Safe unloading strategies for trucks and trailers

  • Unattended/parked forklifts
  • Forklift fueling and battery charging

Course materials are based on OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.178 Subpart N, Materials Handling and Storage.
