Overview & Objectives
Workers may be exposed to a number of substances considered toxic or hazardous per OSHA Standard 29 CFR Part 1910.1000 Subpart Z while performing their job duties. When these substances contaminate the air, they can potentially cause illness, injuries, and even fatalities. The Subpart Z Toxic and Hazardous Substances for General Industry course from Exceed Safety identifies 24 hazardous substances and areas of concern and provides toxic and hazardous substances training to help workers stay protected on the job when air contaminants are present.
During this course, students will learn more about OSHA’s standards for air contaminants and safe work practices. Course topics include:
- An introduction to Subpart Z
- Air contaminants, including asbestos, vinyl chloride, and 13 known carcinogens
- The dangers of exposure to common toxic and hazardous substances, including lead, chromium VI, inorganic arsenic, and more
- Hazard Communication (HazCom)
- Retention of DOT markings, placards and labels
- The use of hazardous chemicals in labs
- How to understand Z tables, including:
- Table Z-1 “Limits for Air Contaminants”
- Table Z-2
- Table Z-3 “Mineral Dusts”
- Using OSHA’s computation formula to determine permissible exposure limits (PELs)
- 3 primary air contaminant controls
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
At the end of the course, students will understand how to prevent exposure to airborne contaminants and work safely when these substances are present.
